PHOTOJOURNALISM in the rear-guard (1936-1939)
The exhibition features the most iconic pictures of life and work in the Catalan rear-guard during the Spanish Civil War, published in the supplement of La Vanguardia newspaper under the heading “Graphic Notes”. The material on display involves photos taken by Rafael Vilarrubias and the treatment they received in the graphic press of the day, a time when pictures were very important, with highlights being the photomontages on the covers and inside pages.
The graphic press became a highly important communication tool within a war setting in which images were used to transmit a political ideology to reinforce social cohesion and morale in the rear-guard.
