“Coexisting” is a selection of photographs taken by Pau de la Calle about the mistreatment and abandonment of animals regarded as victims of livestock farming.
This prize-winning project is a visual description of the work carried out by the Fundación Santuario Gaia, a vegan center devoted to the rescue and recovery of farm animals that have been subjected to mistreatment and abandonment.
Only two animal sanctuaries of this type existed in Spain when the foundation was first set up, neither of them dedicated to farm animals. “Farm animals are animals that no one helps.
They are regarded merely as products of consumption, the last and the least of creatures”, says Coque, the cofounder of the Sanctuary. “By telling the story of these animals, at Gaia we want people to stop seeing them as a product, but rather as family pets like cats or dogs”.
